Constant Montpellier of Saint-Lazare, Quebec and Suzanne Dionne of Chelsea, Quebec win Seventh International Big Rideau lake Speed Skating Marathon in Portland, Ontario.

Skate the Lake returns with a bang

Jan 30, 2011. Portland, Ontario, Canada

Congratulation to Constant Montpellier of Saint-Lazare, Quebec (who was in Portland for the first time) and to Suzanne Dionne of Chelsea, Quebec, the winners in the 25K International Big Rideau lake Speed Skating Marathon with the men and women. On Saturday, the ice was fast and furious and for most of the day the flurries held up. Montpellier defeated Nathan Feinberg of Rochester, New York by less than nine seconds. His final time was 53 minutes and 16 seconds. Dionne finished the race in 58 minutes and 34 seconds. It was the third time Dionne won in Portland.

After having taken on year off, Skate the Lake returned with a bang. Crowds were as large as they have ever been, and approximately 300 skaters took part in the five different races.

The results of the seventh International Big Rideau lake Speed Skating Marathon are now available online.

Olympic medalist and Canadian freestyle skier Deidra Dionne was the special guest at Skate the Lake this year thanks to the Royal Bank Olympian program. Deidra brought her bronze medal from the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City to the event and she skated in the 5X1K relay with members of the Portland Outdoors organizing committee. Thank you Deidra for coming!

Local community groups had great success at Skate the Lake. The Portland Girl Guides sold out of Snert (Dutch pea soup) and everything else they offered, Rideau Centennial Public School sold out of chili in the community centre and the bake sale was a great success as well. Portland Outdoors is proud to continue to make Skate the Lake an event where local groups can raise funds.
